Principal Software Engineer
Location: Canberra, ACT
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (On-site at Barton office with flexible options available)
Contract Duration: Until 30 June 2026
Start Date: Monday, 6 October 2025
Extension Options: Up to 2 x 12-month terms
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 2
Hours: Maximum 40 hours per week
Experience Level: Principal / EL2 equivalent
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer to lead technical strategy and governance across a suite of digital products. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a leadership position, has a strong background in software development, and is passionate about mentoring teams and driving technical excellence.
You will be responsible for architectural decisions, ensuring scalable and maintainable systems, and acting as a key technical liaison between stakeholders and development teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and communicate the technical strategy for supported products.
- Promote scalable, maintainable systems through governance and design reviews.
- Resolve technical blockers and provide escalation support.
- Champion continuous integration and improvement practices.
- Standardise technical practices across teams.
- Ensure compliance with best practices and relevant frameworks.
- Act as a conduit between technical and business stakeholders.
- Mentor technical staff and foster a collaborative team culture.
- Develop and review design, architectural, and technical documentation.
- Engage in strong stakeholder relationship management.
Technical Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Proven experience in software development using .Net and Angular.
- Experience supporting digital solutions across diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and architectural designs.
Desirable:
- Experience or qualifications in agile software development.
- Experience designing cloud-native applications or migrating on-premises solutions to the cloud.
