We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Android Developer to join a major government digital transformation programme. This is an opportunity to provide technical leadership on a nationally significant mobile application used by millions of Australians.

This role is ideal for an experienced Android Engineer who thrives in fast‑paced, multi‑disciplinary environments, enjoys solving complex technical problems, and is passionate about building high‑quality, user‑centred mobile experiences.

Contract Details

Role Principal Android Developer
Start date Early July 2026
Contract length 12 months
Extensions Up to an additional 24 months
Clearance Ability to obtain Baseline clearance
Hours Up to 40 hours per week
Working model Hybrid

Eligible locations Canberra (preferred), Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide
Other locations cannot be considered. The first six weeks are required onsite full‑time, followed by a hybrid arrangement of at least three days per week onsite.

About the Role

As a Principal Android Developer, you will lead and contribute to the delivery of a major Android mobile application within an agile multi‑disciplinary team. You will provide technical direction, oversee development quality, and support the design and delivery of features that enhance the experience for millions of end users.

This position requires strong technical capability, exceptional communication skills, and proven experience delivering complex native Android solutions.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop native Android applications using Java or Kotlin with a strong focus on engineering quality and user experience
* Drive the design and integration of backend services including APIs and web services
* Provide technical leadership across engineering standards, testing quality, and code review
* Contribute to project strategy, solution design, iterations, and delivery timelines
* Work closely with stakeholders including product, UX, and technical teams
* Lead workshops, design discussions and contribute to updates of design patterns and governance
* Support iterative prototyping, development, and technical review cycles
* Promote clean, testable, maintainable code and strong engineering principles
* Contribute to organisational development around methods, tools, and emerging technologies

Technical Skills and Experience

Essential

* Minimum 3 years' experience in native Android development using Java or Kotlin
* Strong experience with Android SDKs and related tools
* Experience with CI/CD, DevOps and version control (Git, Azure DevOps etc.)
* Experience with backend integrations, APIs and web services
* Ability to design, write and run automated tests (Python, JavaScript, Cucumber, Mockito, Selenium)
* Experience in agile environments (Scrum, Kanban, TDD, BDD etc.)
* Demonstrated ability to lead development initiatives, guide engineering practices and mentor other developers

Desirable

* Experience developing for wearable technology
* Exposure to business process improvement
* Strong understanding of emerging technology trends and their practical application

* Demonstrated experience providing specialist technical advice at an organisational level
* Proven capability in systems design, software architecture, integration and release management
