Optical Transmission Engineer (SDH/DWDM/OTN)

Location: Sydney

We are looking for an experienced Transmission Engineer to support our client's with the migration of legacy transmission networks to next‑generation optical communication systems. This role is ideal for someone with strong hands‑on experience across SDH, DWDM, Ethernet, ASON, and optical transport technologies, particularly in network migration environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse and document existing legacy transmission networks (SDH, DWDM, Ethernet, ASON).
  • Develop migration strategies and timelines for modern packet/optical platforms (DWDM, OTN, MPLS, MPLS‑TP).
  • Execute traffic cutovers, rerouting, commissioning, and service migrations with minimal disruption.
  • Work closely with operations teams, vendors, and customers to ensure smooth transitions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues during and after migration activities.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and validation post‑migration.
  • Update network inventory, documentation, and records after changes.
Skills & Experience
  • Strong understanding of SDH/SONET systems and network elements (STM‑1/4/16/64)
  • Expertise in DWDM, Ethernet, ASON, and packet optical transport (Layer 0/1)
  • Knowledge of SDH protection mechanisms (SNCP, MSP, MS‑SP ring)
  • Experience with major vendors: Nokia, Huawei, Ciena, Cisco, Alcatel‑Lucent, Tejas, ECI, Tellabs, Marconi
  • Hands‑on experience with NMS and element management tools
  • Skilled in service provisioning, cutover planning, and impact analysis
  • Ability to interpret network diagrams, fiber plans, and logical schematics
  • Experience in legacy‑to‑modern optical network migration (highly regarded)
  • Bonus: scripting or automation experience for configuration and migration tasks
