Contract opportunity | Senior level | Hybrid working

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer Back End Development Expert to join a large scale, high impact digital program within the Australian Government environment. This role offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership, design complex systems, and contribute to the delivery of secure, scalable, and high performing digital services used by millions of Australians.

This is a long term contract opportunity with an initial 12 month engagement and extension potential of up to 24 months.

For the first six weeks, the successful candidate must work onsite full time. Following this period, a hybrid arrangement will be considered, with a minimum of three days per week onsite from the nominated capital city location.

About the role

Senior Software Engineers also referred to as Development Experts are responsible for leading software development activities, designing robust technical solutions, and ensuring the quality and functionality of systems delivered by their teams.

As a Back End Development Expert, you will focus on server side development, system integration, and underlying infrastructure, ensuring applications are secure, reliable, and scalable. You will work closely with front end developers, architects, and stakeholders to deliver high quality digital solutions that meet complex business and user needs.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and design highly complex software and technical solutions
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to other software engineers
• Analyse and translate complex technical requirements into clear development solutions
• Define, build, and maintain databases ensuring performance, reliability, and security
• Develop and optimise back end applications and web architectures
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs and service integrations
• Investigate and resolve complex ICT and production issues
• Conduct performance testing across browsers and devices
• Optimise systems to improve speed, scalability, and resilience
• Collaborate with front end developers to deliver cohesive user experiences
• Produce clear code documentation and contribute to technical artefacts
• Provide regular progress updates to project stakeholders
• Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in web development

Technical skills and experience

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong experience across a number of the following:

• Hands on development experience with Java Spring highly desirable
• Experience with one or more of Ruby PHP or Python
• Strong understanding of RESTful API development and standards
• Experience with document and relational databases such as MongoDB DB2 or PostgreSQL
• Knowledge of Redis and Kafka
• Experience with Node.js
• Working knowledge of CMS frameworks
• Minimum three years experience as a Back End Developer
• Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle within an agile environment
• Excellent problem solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to think creatively and design innovative technical solutions
